If a seventh grader can...can you?

From World Net Daily -

12-year-old steals day with pro-life speech Teachers threaten disqualification, but girl chooses to speak against abortion-----

Despite facing threats of disqualification, a 12-year-old girl took first place in a speech contest when she eloquently argued for the rights of unborn children – after an offended judge quit.

"What if I told you that right now, someone was choosing if you were going to live or die?" the seventh-grader begins in a video recording of her speech on YouTube. "What if I told you that this choice wasn't based on what you could or couldn't do, what you'd done in the past or what you would do in the future? And what if I told you, you could do nothing about it?"

The girl, a student at a Toronto school identified only as "Lia," continued:

"Fellow students and teachers, thousands of children are right now in that very situation. Someone is choosing without even knowing them whether they are going to live or die.
"That someone is their mother. And that choice is abortion."

"Why do we think that just because a fetus can't talk or do what we do, it isn't a human being yet?" She asks in the video. "Some babies are born after only five months. Is this baby not human?

"We would never say that. Yet abortions are performed on 5-month-old fetuses all the time. Or do we only call them humans if they're wanted?"

She continues, "No, fetuses are definitely humans – knit together in their mother's womb by their wonderful Creator who knows them all by name."

Wayne,

Glad to see you're back and blogging - take it easy for a while, eh?

With regards to the video - at what age is a fertilized egg considered to be 'a human', in your opinion? Conception? 1 day? 1 week? 1 month?

I feel that my opposition to abortion rises exponentially the further along the pregnancy gets; I find it hard to feel outrage at the morning-after pill or when the fertilized egg fails to cling on to the uterus properly.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

It’s good to be back –

Steve – She does have guts! Didn’t back down from what she wanted to do and presented the case perfectly.

Matt – Yes – I am taking it easy…maybe too easy…lol.

At the moment of fertilization we have a human. The stage of development is not the determining factor of whether or not it is human.

Human sperm + human egg + fertilization = human. This is just the first stage of many that all humans will go through until they die.

“I feel that my opposition to abortion rises exponentially the further along the pregnancy gets; I find it hard to feel outrage at the morning-after pill or when the fertilized egg fails to cling on to the uterus properly.”

The morning-after pill – what does that mean first of all? Is there an assumption by the woman that she ‘may’ be pregnant? If this is the assumption, then in her mind she is aborting a fetus (no matter how small). Could she really be pregnant the ‘morning after’? I don’t know. I do know that the morning-after pill is really just a super charged dose of birth control designed to make the womb a very bad place for a fertilized egg to be in. If the egg is fertilized and the woman is pregnant, then yes, she is aborting a baby.

Now, if naturally, the fertilized egg fails to cling to the uterus, this is a miscarriage and neither the woman nor any ‘doctor’ has purposely interfered with the progress of the baby and thus no abortion has taken place.

What about extenuating circumstances - like in instances of rape or where the health of the mother is at risk?

I understand that this is a difficult issue, so I'd just like to know your position on these things.

Also, if having an abortion where to be made illegal - what would be the appropriate punishment for the doctor/mother?

How would you control illegal abortions?

Tricky, tricky issue...

Matt -

Good questions.

"What about extenuating circumstances - like in instances of rape or where the health of the mother is at risk?"

Rape, incest and risk of mothers life account for less than 1% of all abortions.

Life is precious. A child should never be punished because a man raped a woman or a father raped a daughter. Killing the child does nothing to right a wrong...it only creates another wrong.

If a mothers life is in danger and she will die because of the baby, then the mothers life comes first and the baby second. But all attempts must be made to save both.

"Also, if having an abortion where to be made illegal - what would be the appropriate punishment for the doctor/mother?"

They would be tried for murder. There can be no other way, Matt.

"How would you control illegal abortions?"

As best as law enforcement could.

No different than raiding crack houses.....you find out where the illegal abortions are taking place and arrest those who are participating in the abortions.

This may sound like a tricky issue, but only because we as a nation have become so accustomed to the abortion industry telling us that it (abortions) are nothing more than simple procedures that every woman should have the 'right' to do.

Groups like Planned Parenthood have done a great sell job to the world proclaiming that abortions are nothing more than removing a blob of tissue; when in fact abortion kills humans.
