United States is one of the largest Muslim nations?

First Obama proclaims to the world that the United States is not a Christian nation, now he is telling the world that the United States is one of the largest Muslim countries in the world.

If the Muslim population in the United States is around 8 million (using the highest estimates) and we live in a country of more than 300 million, that would put the Muslim population at around 2.5%.

The press really needs to start holding the president accountable to statements like this.

You should check out this eye-opening site about Islam and terrorism. It is pretty cool if you ask me to see what is going on in the world. Blessings to you brother in Christ! http://www.obsessionthemovie.com/27minversion.php

Erm, he said that if you were to take the number of Muslim-Americans as a whole, that would be one of the biggest Muslim populations in the world. The point is that there are a lot of Muslims in the US.

Now, according to the article, he's not quite on the money because the absolute number of Muslims (8m) would only just break the top 30, but it is still a significant number.

He's trying to avoid an 'us & them' mentality by saying that a substantial portion of Americans are Muslim.

The way you phrased it in your post makes it sound like he was proclaiming the US a 'Muslim Country'.

He's trying to build bridges - what's wrong with that?

I just put a post up about this topic last night. It never ceases to amaze me the things that come out of this man mouth.

Muslim Population:

* Indonesia: 200 million Muslims.
* India: 156 million Muslims.
* Pakistan: 150 million Muslims.
* United States: 2.3 million Muslims
(according to the Pew Research Center)

That is a far cry from the US being one of the largest.

Obama's exact words:

"Now, the flip side is I think that the United States and the West generally, we have to educate ourselves more effectively on Islam. And one of the points I want to make is, is that if you actually took the number of Muslims Americans, we'd be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world."

Sounds to me like he is saying we are one of the largest Muslim countries in the world.

Hello Wayne,

I read it the exact same way as well...

So?

If you took all the Muslim Americans and set them aside, they would be one of the largest Muslim populations in the world (depending on your estimates).

Not among the top 10, but then you would assume that anyway. People do not realize that there are a significant number of Muslims in the US and he's pointing that out.

But why is he saying this? Do you think he actually thinks that America is a 'Muslim Country'?

Of course he doesn't.

But he was speaking in Cairo and the US has a long way to go to rebuild relationships with the Islamic world; he's trying to let them know that the US is not some big, white stranger that they need to be scared of.

What, exactly, is wrong with this approach?

I will fully admit, for the record, that his wording makes him sound like an idiot at demographics, but then again, his style/substance ratio has always been a bit iffy.

He's still better than the last guy...!

It's hard to say he's better than the last guy when in a lot of ways he just seems like Bush 2.0 or even Super Bush.

I wasn't a Bush fan, but I certainly wouldn't say that President Obama is better either.

That being said, I don't really find any fault in President Obama's statement. I agree with Matt. The accuracy of the statistics aside, he was just trying to point out that the US has a lot of Muslims.

The U.S. does not have a lot of Muslims.

We have relatively few Muslims.

We have a lot of Christians.

He would never say that we are one the largest Christian nations in the world.

He loves playing with and twisting words for his leftist purposes...that's all.

He is a disaster, not only for the U.S....but for the world.

Steve,

The point is that the US has more Muslims than a lot of people realize (or would like to admit). That's all.

How many of the 'lots' of Christians in the US are True Christians, in your opinion.

I mean, do the Catholics count? What about all those suckers in the mega-churches. Lutherans? Mormons?

Give me an estimate of how many genuine, born-again true Christians there are in the US. I'd be interested to know what your ball-park figure is.

Matt - The polls differ on how many born again Christians are in the US.

I just did a quick Google and saw one link that showed 45% of America considers itself Born-Again.

Another said 55%.

Even if the true count was, say, 35% of the population of the country, that would put the Born-Again crowd at around 100 million. That seems pretty high based on who is in office and where we are as a country. ;)

Like Steve said, Obama would never say that we are one the largest Christian nations in the world.

From Wiki I get;

78% Christian, of which 51% are Protestant (I guess we can discount the Catholics, LDS, Jehovah's Witness etc) so I'd say 35% is fair number for those who 'claim' to be born again. As we both know, claiming something doesn't necessarily make it so.

You'd have to factor in a certain percentage of False Converts into that number too, along with those who are pretending in order to avoid social ostracism.

So, maybe 25-30% are 'saved' Christians in the US.

Considering the fact that Christianity has been a cultural mainstay in your country for 500 hundred-odd years, and there's significant competition from the Catholics and others, that's not bad going!

But if you were a guy in the Middle East and you were going to take a guess, without looking it up, you'd probably guess a lot higher. And if you were guessing the number of Muslims, you'd probably guess lower than the reality.

Again, he's trying to build bridges; it's a good thing.

What would you prefer he do?

Go into Cairo and say, have you ever told a lie?

Pfft. Think about the context.

Neville Chamberlain was trying to build bridges also.

Steve,

I'm no history buff - you'll have to explain how that is at all relevant because I don't quite know what your meaning is with this last comment.
