Climate chief Lord Stern: give up meat to save the planet

From the TIMESONLINE -

People will need to turn vegetarian if the world is to conquer climate change, according to a leading authority on global warming.

In an interview with The Times, Lord Stern of Brentford said: “Meat is a wasteful use of water and creates a lot of greenhouse gases. It puts enormous pressure on the world’s resources. A vegetarian diet is better.”

Direct emissions of methane from cows and pigs is a significant source of greenhouse gases. Methane is 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide as a global warming gas.

This sounds to me like we should be eating more cows and pigs!

"I'll give you my pork chop when you take it from my cold dead hands!"

Wayne,

Eating more cows and pig wouldn't reduce their numbers, would it. That's what farming id for - replenishing food sources.

What Lord Stern said is true, a vegetarian diet would be better in terms of planetary resources. There is no question about this.

Having said that, I still agree with the last line of your post....

[yes, I'm a hypocrite]

So...if it keeps getting colder (as it has been for the last 8 years) do we then eat MORE meat to warm the place up a bit?

Since the weather changes from day to day, and from year to year, and from century to century...can anyone tell me the optimum mean temperature for planet earth?

I didn't think so.

Foolishness. That's about the best thing I can say about it.

They were right...

there is a real disaster about to happen:

Steve,

Humans have been burning increasingly massive quantities of fossil fuels for over a century now. We know that these emissions contribute to the 'greenhouse effect'.

Neither of those things can be disputed, correct.

So, while human contribution to emissions may be small, it has most certainly been rapid and there is a possibility that this leads to climate instability (more unstable than normal, at any rate).

You can't really go wrong with saying that we aught to burn less fossil fuels, can you?

Just having fun! ;)

Based partly on the reasoning of this article, I have decided to become a cannibal for the betterment of Mother Earth.

Joe,

Let us know if you come across any good recipes, eh?

It's absolutely true that growing meat to eat is wasteful.

Basically you have to grow a vegetarian diet of grains and so on... then feed that to the animal to grow it. Then you eat the animal. The point being we could just eat the first step.

That said I don't plan to stop anytime soon either!
