Angry relatives of 9/11 victims last night clashed with supporters of a planned mosque near Ground Zero at a raucous community-board hearing in Manhattan.
After four hours of public debate, members of Community Board 1 finally voted 29-1 in support of the project. Nine members abstained, arguing that they wanted to table the issue and vote at a later date.
The board has no official say over whether the estimated $100 million mosque and community center gets built. But the panel's support, or lack of it, is considered important in influencing public opinion.
Holding up photos of loved ones killed in the Twin Towers and carrying signs such as, "Honor 3,000, 9/11 -- No mosque!" opponents of the proposed Cordoba House on Park Place called the plan an insult to the terror-attack victims.
"That is a burial ground," said retired FDNY Deputy Chief Al Santora, referring to the fact that victims' remains were scattered for blocks.
Santora's 23-year-old son, Christopher, was the youngest firefighter to die that day.
"I do have a problem with having a mosque on top of the site where [terrorists] can gloat about what they did," said Santora, with his wife, Maureen, by his side.

You know they're not planning to build it on Ground Zero, right? It's like 2 blocks away.
From what I can gather:

Sounds sinister....
"They own the land, and their plans don't have any zoning changes," Sheffe said. "They came to us for our opinions and to let us know their plans. It was purely voluntary on their part."
OK.

Yikes! Can't let them counter the extremist momentum, can we?
"Sheffe said a community center for lower Manhattan residents is "desperately needed." The area was mostly commercial, Sheffe said, but as more people move downtown, the lack of residential amenities is a problem."

"I think it's the right thing to do," said Marvin Bethea, who was a paramedic at ground zero. "I lost 16 friends down there. But Muslims also got killed on 9/11. It would be a good sign of faith that we're not condemning all Muslims and that the Muslims who did this happened to be extremists. As a black man, I know what it's like to be discriminated against when you haven't done anything."
Interesting.
"I understand the anger, the bitterness and hatred, but it only generates more hatred," Herbert Ouida, whose son was killed in the attacks, said. "Such a large part of the world has this faith, and to say anyone who has this faith is a terrorist, it's terrible."
Differing views on this.
Personally I think Islam can go jump off a pier, but if America wants to call itself the land of the free then you can't deny people the right to religious worship anywhere, can you?
Why should the land of the free (and that is becoming a joke, also) allow a 'religion' that has a core belief to NOT let people be free, and which also has in it's revered book passages that clearly state that this religion should be the ONLY religion allowed to exist in the world?
It is an evil, murderous, and inhumane religious and political system.
It is (was) a mistake to ever let these people in the country to begin with.
Why give people who wish to destroy your "free" way of life a chance to destroy it?
We truly are stupid and foolish.
Here are a few tidbits from their "holy book" the Qur'an:
"Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued" (Qur'an 9:29).
"Allah's Apostle said: 'I have been ordered (by Allah) to fight against the people until they testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is Allah's Apostle . . . '" (Bukhari Volume 1, Book 2, Number 24).
"It is not for any prophet to have captives until he hath made slaughter in the land. Ye desire the lure of this world and Allah desireth (for you) the Hereafter, and Allah is Mighty, Wise" (Qur'an 8:67).
"Allah’s Apostle said, 'I have been made victorious with terror'" (Bukhari Volume 4, Book 52, Number 220).
"Allah's Apostle was asked, 'What is the best deed?' He replied, 'To believe in Allah and His Apostle (Muhammad).' The questioner then asked, 'What is the next (in goodness)?' He replied, 'To participate in Jihad (religious fighting) in Allah's Cause.' The questioner again asked, 'What is the next (in goodness)?' He replied, 'To perform Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca). . .'" (Bukhari Volume 1, Book 2, Number 25).
"Say to the Unbelievers, if (now) they desist (from Unbelief), their past would be forgiven them; but if they persist, the punishment of those before them is already (a matter of warning for them). And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism: i.e. worshipping others besides Allah) and the religion (worship) will all be for Allah Alone (in the whole of the world). But if they cease (worshipping others besides Allah), then certainly, Allah is All-Seer of what they do" (Qur'an 8:38; ayah 39 from Noble Qur'an).
At least 100 million Muslims believe this way (10% of Muslims). I believe that to be a low estimate.
The 90% will not speak out against the 10% for the 10% have the Qur'an on their side and will not hestitate to kill those that oppose them.

I do not disagree with you about Islam and what a messed-up religion it is.
But you don't get to decide that one man's religion should be any less protected by the Constitution than the next. Nobody does.
What are you going to do? Deport all the Muslims? What if an American-born citizen converts to Islam? Immediate deportation?
Islam is a truly destructive and absurd religion, but the only way to defeat it is to allow people to see it for what it is, have it held up to scrutiny (in the same way the Bible has for many years) and rejected for the murderous, bigoted and ignorant dogma that it is.
A stand definitely needs to be taken against any attempts to implement even the hint of Sharia law, of course, but to not allow a religion altogether, that's another thing entirely.

The problem with living in a country like ours is that many times the right thing is ignored for the popular thing. Right now acceptance and tolerance rule the day. Businesses don't want to be accused of abusing the rights of their minority employees, politicians don't want to be accused of anything that might be perceived as politically incorrect (which changes with every wind and wave).
We live in a country that provides freedom to all, despite our agreement with others views. Is there somewhere better to live?
Living in Iraq these last few weeks sure makes me appreciate America, with all her ugliness.
I would absolutely LOVE to see Steve's solution to "deporting them".
