Would Jesus have the sinner die?

Would Jesus have the sinner die?
Why hangs He then on yonder tree?
What means that strange expiring cry?
(Sinners, He prays for you and me)
“Forgive them, Father, O forgive,
They know not that by Me they live,”
“They know not that by Me they live!”

Jesus descended from above,
Our loss of Eden to retrieve,
Great God of universal love,
If all the world through Thee may live,
In us a quickening Spirit be,
And witness Thou hast died for me,
And witness Thou hast died for me!

Thou loving, all-atoning Lamb,
Thee—by Thy painful agony,
Thy bloody sweat, Thy grief and shame,
Thy cross and passion on the tree,
Thy precious death and life—I pray,
Take all, take all my sins away,
Take all, take all my sins away!

O let me kiss Thy bleeding feet,
And bathe and wash them with my tears!
The story of Thy love repeat
In every drooping sinner’s ears,
That all may hear the quickening sound,
Since I, even I, have mercy found,
Since I, even I, have mercy found.

O let Thy love my heart constrain!
Thy love for every sinner free,
That every fallen soul of man
May taste the grace that found out me;
That all mankind with me may prove
Thy sovereign everlasting love,
Thy sovereign everlasting love.

Charles Wesley

Why don't we sing hymns like this anymore? Would one or two of these kinds of hymns really cramp our style on Sunday every week? These kinds of hymns were filled with a real passion for our Lord unlike some of the shallow songs that fill the air on the Lords day now.

Bring back the great hymns of the Wesley's, Watt's, Newton's, Kenn's and all.........

Let's get back to singing hymns where Jesus is the main subject and not "us" or "I" or "me".

I love to sing hymns or even read as a devotonal.

Funny, the first thing that hit me when reading the first paragraph was Wesley's defense of arminian theology.

Steve - You are blessed indeed -

Tracy - Reading them as devotionals is a great idea!

Jonathan - Very funny!

Just for you Jonathan -

Election is a truth divine,
As absolute as free;
Works ne'er can make the blessing mine; 'Tis God's own wise decree.

Nor law, nor death, nor hell, nor sin, Can alter his decree;
The elect eternal life shall win,
And all God's glory see.

William Gadsby (From Hymn 530)

Haha, thanks Wayne! I appreciate the poetry in hymns, don't know about the music that accompanies them. "Come, thou fount of every blessing" and "Amazing grace" are among my favorites (music included).

Why don't you make a request at church? Or would you like me to?
