That darn "L" in TULIP is...Thanks Steve!

That darn "L" in TULIP is probably the least understood and the most challenged outside the reformed faith.

Arron does a great job in answering some of those objections.

I have heard a lot of reformed folks say the "L" needs to be changed to something else so people won't misunderstand it's true meaning.

The "Limited" in Limited Atonement does not now or has it ever meant that Christ's attoning work on the cross was insufficient in any manner whatsoever.

What Jesus did on the cross was sufficient to pay for the sins of the entire world.

The word that many reformed faith folks are using now is "definite" atonement...but that messes up the cool acronym ;).

From R.C. Sproul :

Why and for whom did God send Jesus to the cross? There are three options:

1. God sent Jesus to redeem everybody (this is universalism which means that everybody will be saved). This view is obviously un-Biblical.

2. God sent Jesus to redeem everyone who would believe (have faith) and take advantage of Christ’s work. This is the view of Arminians who believe that Christ’s death was potential atonement, not actual atonement.

3. God sent Jesus to redeem only the elect (the chosen church -- Unconditional Election). This is the reformed view whereby we believe that Christ’s death was an actual atonement.Dawghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06667201139980869656noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20374252.post-57191246316437109062010-08-24T04:15:32.488-05:002010-08-24T04:15:32.488-05:00Thanks for the blog article, and thank you for the...Thanks for the blog article, and thank you for the comments stimulating reading :)

Do you mind if I ask a few questions of the person who has commented?

Steve, thanks for your comments, and for the concerns you have raised. My challenges would be probably be as follows.

The atonement you believe in doesn't seem to actually save anybody if they have to do something to "activate it" - it only makes it possible. Is it more loving for a fireman to throw a rope to a dying a child, or pick them up and carry them to safety?

The God of the reformed faith certain does love all, and commands all to repent, and offers the Gospel freely to all. The mystery of how this works in His infinite mind is, as Spurgeon said, "[A doctrine] to be swallowed whole, and not chewed over with constant questioning."

If unbelief is a sin (and it is, Tit. 1:15, Heb. 3:12) and Christ died for everybody's sins as you suppose, then everyone is saved, whether they believe or not - their sin of unbelief has been atoned for. If you deny this, then you yourself have already limited the atonement too - limited it's scope (if you say it didn't atone for unbelief), or limited it's power (if you say it doesn't actually atone, only makes atonement possible). C.H. Spurgeon says, "The arminian cannot stop at his halfway house - he must press on the full journey and become a universalist."

Looking forward to your response.

Love in Christ Jesus, whom to know is life eternal,

Arron

http://brotherarron.blogspot.com/
http://www.king-size-memory-foam-mattress.com/Arronhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09419186492121855037noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20374252.post-12671157068973328102010-08-23T18:13:42.204-05:002010-08-23T18:13:42.204-05:00"Calvinism stunts holiness?"
I'd ne..."Calvinism stunts holiness?"

I'd never say that. I'd say that the lack of assurance (because the Sacraments do not actually contain the Living God) gives rise to holiness...or the holiness project, at least.

And the 'L' in TULIP still stands for 'limited', which means that Christ's atonement was not for everyone (or "the whole world", as the Bible says).

My God loves all, died for all, forgives all...but many will reject that love. There is a big difference there.Steve Martinhttp://theoldadam.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.com
